What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

A Plain-English Guide for Singapore Businesses

When someone searches “how often should I service my aircon” and a direct answer appears at the top of Google, before any of the blue links, that’s AEO at work.

When a parent asks their phone “how do I prepare my child for PSLE Math” and hears an answer read out from a specific website, that’s AEO at work.

When a procurement manager types a question into Google and gets the answer without clicking anything, that’s AEO at work too.

Most Singapore businesses are still optimising for the blue links. The ones getting ahead are optimising to be the answer itself.

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website content so that search engines and AI tools choose your page as the direct answer to a question, rather than just listing it as one of many results.

Traditional SEO gets your page onto the first page of Google. AEO gets your content chosen as the answer shown above those results: in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice search responses, and AI-generated answers like Google’s AI Overviews.

This matters because more and more searches now end on the results page itself. People get their answer without clicking through to any website. If your content isn’t structured to be that answer, you can be invisible even when you rank on page one.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO and AEO work together, but they aim for different things.

SEO aims for ranking position: appearing as high as possible in the list of results. Success is measured in clicks, traffic and keyword rankings.

AEO aims for answer position: being chosen as the direct response to a question. Success is measured in featured snippets, People Also Ask appearances and citations in AI answers.

A page can rank first for a keyword and still lose the answer box to a competitor whose content is better structured. A page ranking fourth or fifth can win the featured snippet if it answers the question more clearly.

AEO isn’t a replacement for SEO. It’s a layer on top that gets more value out of the rankings you already have.

Why AEO matters for Singapore businesses

Singaporeans search on their phones constantly: on the MRT, between meetings, while waiting in a queue. Questions like “where can I service my aircon near Punggol” or “what score do I need for AL1 in PSLE” are asked conversationally, and people expect a direct answer, not a list of links.

Google has also expanded featured snippets, People Also Ask and AI Overviews across Singapore search results. For most question-based searches, the top of the page is now taken up by direct answers.

You can’t pay for these positions. Ads don’t appear in featured snippets. They’re earned entirely through clear, useful, well-structured content.

Where AEO shows up

Featured snippets

Featured snippets appear at the very top of Google results, showing a short excerpt from a page with its title and link. They appear for definition questions (“what is AEO”), how-to questions (“how to clean an aircon filter”) and comparisons (“SEO vs AEO vs GEO”).

People Also Ask

These boxes show related questions people commonly search. Each expands to reveal a short answer from a website. Appearing here builds authority in your industry and brings in visibility for questions you didn’t directly target.

Voice search

Voice searches are conversational: “what’s the best tuition centre in Sengkang” or “how much does aircon servicing cost in Singapore.” Voice assistants often read out the same answer that appears in the featured snippet, so winning one often means winning both.

Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews are AI-written summaries at the top of many Google searches, pulling from several websites. Pages with clear, well-structured answers are more likely to be cited in them.

What makes content get chosen as the answer?

Five things make the biggest difference:

  1. Headings that match real questions. Use the exact questions your customers ask as your H2 and H3 headings, such as “How much does aircon servicing cost?”, not vague headings like “Our pricing.”

  2. The answer first. Put a clear, direct answer of 40–60 words straight after each question heading. Add detail and examples after that.

  3. Easy-to-scan formats. Use numbered steps for processes, bullet points for lists and tables for comparisons. These are the formats Google most often pulls into answer boxes.

  4. FAQ sections with schema markup. A short FAQ at the end of key pages, with FAQ schema behind it, helps Google and AI tools understand exactly which question each answer belongs to.

  5. Clear, trustworthy information about your business. Consistent details about who you are, what you do and where you operate help search engines and AI tools trust your content enough to quote it.

Where to find the questions worth answering

This is where most AEO goes wrong. Businesses guess which questions to answer, or copy what competitors write.

The best questions come from your customers. Look at the questions people ask on WhatsApp, in enquiry forms, on sales calls and in reviews. Better still, talk to a few customers and ask what they searched for before they found you.

At Kleaarity, this is where we start: real customer conversations, not AI-generated guesses. When your content answers the exact questions your buyers are asking, in their words, it’s far more likely to be chosen as the answer.

What’s the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO and GEO are closely related, but they target different systems.

AEO focuses on Google’s own search features: featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice search and AI Overviews. The goal is to own the answer on the search results page.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) focuses on standalone AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. The goal is to be mentioned or cited when these tools answer questions on their own.

The two overlap a lot. Content that’s well structured for AEO (clear answers, question-based headings, schema markup) tends to do well in GEO too. GEO adds extra layers, such as making sure AI tools clearly understand who your business is and seeing your business mentioned across other trusted websites.

We treat SEO, AEO and GEO as one joined-up approach, because buyers now search across all three. (Link “GEO” to /blog/what-is-geo.)

Examples of AEO in practice

A tuition centre could own answers for questions like “how to prepare for O Level A Math,” “what is the passing mark for PSLE” or “why is my child struggling with Math.” Parents ask these long before they search for a tuition centre. By the time a parent searches “A Math tuition Hougang,” the centre has already earned their trust.

An aircon servicing company could appear in answers for “how often should I service my aircon,” “why is my aircon leaking water” and “what is an aircon chemical wash.” These are the questions homeowners ask right before they call someone.

A professional services firm could appear for “how long does SEO take in Singapore” or “how much does SEO cost,” reaching buyers while they’re still researching, before they’ve made a shortlist.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Every website is different, but a typical timeline looks like this:

  • Weeks 1–2: content restructured with question-based headings and direct answers, and FAQ schema added

  • Weeks 3–6: Google re-reads the updated pages, and first answer-box appearances start for less competitive questions

  • Months 2–3: more consistent appearances across your main topics, including voice answers

  • Months 3–6: stronger authority on your core topics, which also helps your visibility in AI tools

Results can come sooner than with traditional SEO for some questions, because much of AEO depends on how clearly your content answers them. Competitive topics still take longer, and work best alongside strong SEO.

Frequently asked questions about AEO

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO helps your page rank in search results. AEO helps your content get chosen as the direct answer shown above those results, in featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice search and AI Overviews. The two work best together.

Do small businesses need AEO?

Yes, often more than large ones. Answer positions can’t be bought with ads, so a small business with clear, helpful content can win answers ahead of bigger competitors.

Does AEO help with ChatGPT and AI search?

It helps. Content structured for AEO is easier for AI tools to understand and quote. To appear consistently in tools like ChatGPT, you’ll usually also need GEO.

What’s the first step to start with AEO?

List the 10 questions customers ask you most, check whether your website answers each one clearly near the top of a page, and add an FAQ section with schema for the ones it doesn’t.
